An 8 year old sable/white sheltie, Reveille was an owner relinquishment who came into the Montgomery County SPCA in the Woodlands Summer 2001; they kindly called Houston Sheltie Rescue. From living exclusively out doors, chained to concrete and without any medical treatment, Reveille had severe ear infections, filthy teeth, and severely matted coat that had to be shaved. He also tested positive for Stage 3 heartworms, a dire case. Reveille had not been properly cared for in many years, and we were all very worried about his prognosis. However, though he was very ill, Reveille successfully completed heartworm disease treatments. With weekly ear washings, his infection improved, and he was finally cured, though with permanent hearing loss. He has had his teeth cleaned and an infected tooth pulled. He has also tested positive for hypothyroidism and the medication has helped with his ear and skin problems dramatically. After many weeks of care, Reveille is now healthy, beautiful, and behaving like a pup. He is playing with other dogs and has become his true Sheltie self, quite remarkable given all he has been through. He went to the Houston Sheltie Rescue anniversary picnic and wowed everyone with his recovery and lovely new coat coming in. This was the last stage of his recovery, for which we are so grateful.
Updated September 2005: Reveille's last four years were pampered, peaceful and happy, a remarkable contrast to where he came from back on 2001. Given all he had been though at the hands of an uncaring individual(s), his ability to be an outgoing and friendly sheltie were a bit inspiring. I miss him ...
